On Wednesday, April 27, 2011, the Tuscaloosa area was hit by an EF4 tornado damaging and destroying homes and businesses and taking the lives of 41 people. We are still working to help those in need. Chain saw crews worked during the first two weeks removing trees from homes and property. In a few cases, we were asked to put up tarps on the roofs of homes until more permanent repairs can be made. The parish hall at Holy Spirit Church became a donation/pick-up location. The Knights Hall also became a shelter and place for those without homes to eat meals. We have ended the first phase of this recovery effort: getting people immediate necessities and providing meals. Now, we are helping people who have been affected get started in a new location.
Donations. Thanks to the donations we have already received, we are no longer accepting water, clothes, food, paper products or toiletrees. We are focusing on making housewares available to make it easier to start in a new home. These items include pots, pans, plates, silverware, linens, pillows, and towels. If you have items to donate, please call (205) 614-3014 to see what is needed. The second phase is also focusing on helping people with financial assistance with necessary bills. If you wish to make a monetary donation, please call (205) 614-3014.
Need Help? If you still have a need at your home, we might be able to help. Please let us know how we can help by calling (205) 614-3014.
Want to Volunteer? If you are available or have resources you can offer, please let us know how you can help by calling (205) 614-3014.
At the council business meeting this evening, Sir Knight and Deacon Adrian Straley presented to the Grand Knight Tim Didyoung a San Damiano Crucifix. This crucifix was sent by Seminarian Charles Merrill, one of the 11 seminarians from the Diocese Birmingham in Alabama. Our council has adopted Charles as our seminarian and sent him financial support earlier this year. He is studying to become a priest in Rome.
