Knights and their wives cooked and sold a variety of authentic Latin foods and drinks.  Food and drink booths were setup in the parking lot between the parish hall and the school buildings.  Just as the event was getting started, rain was headed toward the church.  A game-time decision was made to move everything into the parish hall, kitchen, and Knights Hall.

After the rain ended, the band started playing and members of the crowd danced into the evening.  Everyone seemed to enjoy the event and has asked for it to be done a few times a year.

1. Would you like a chance at $25 CASH for just a little bit of your time? Centerplate, the concession vendor at the University, wants to have full attendance at their concession training sessions this fall. They want to reward us with $250 if we attend with at least 50 volunteers. We want to pass along part of this reward to some of you. If we qualify for the $250, we’ll distribute $25 to 5 people that attended by random drawing. Our group is scheduled to attend this Saturday, Aug 7 at 10am. If you cannot make that one, you can also attend next Saturday, Aug 14 at 10am or 4pm. If 50 our of people go to their training, we’ll do the drawing at the concession party on Saturday, Aug 21st. You don’t have to attend the party to win, but you do have to attend one of the training sessions. Bring your spouse, bring your children if they’re 16 years of age or older. Even if you don’t normally work a concession, consider going to ensure 5 people are able to take home $25. The training will be in the recruiting room at the stadium. Enter at gate 1 in the north end zone. Reply back with the day and time you plan to attend.

3. Thanks for all the participation at the concesiones this weekend. It was a lot of fun for all.
4. Need people to help sell Boston Butt Tickets after all the masses. Last weekend we had a good head start on dales. Thanks again to Ryan Marks, Steve Leisure, and Chris Didyoung for helping me out.
5. Tickets are on sale for the Hispanic Round Table Latin Food Festival $1.00 It is on August 14th after 5:30 Mass. Let’s support our fellow Knights.

1. Need Help.  NO ONE has signed up for the concessions on Friday July 30 at 4:30 pm or Saturday July 31 at 7:00 am.  We meet at the back door of Coleman Coliseum. PLEASE CALL 247-5555 or 758-0271.
2. Boston Butt tickets are ready. Contact me so we can get an early start for the weekend of the 30th.

   • Due to a wedding, Installation of Officers on August 7 has been postponed.  Will let you know when the new date is scheduled.

On June 1, 2009, there was no significant Hispanic presence in the Knights of Columbus in Alabama but through a concentrated Hispanic initiative, supported by Bishop Robert J. Baker of the Birmingham Diocese, and Archbishop Thomas J. Rodi of Mobile, the membership team of the Alabama Knights of Columbus began actively recruiting members of the Hispanic community.

This effort was kicked off in Tuscaloosa by Father Jesse Rodriguez, a member of the Tuscaloosa Council; Deacon Adrian Straley, also of the Tuscaloosa Council; Steve Griffin, state membership director and member of the Tuscaloosa Council; Al Cala, Supreme Council Hispanic Coordinator in New Haven, Cn., and District Deputy William Drescher, St. Thomas the Apostle, Montevallo.

The group pulled together the resources to create a Hispanic Degree Team for the First Degree Knights and later a Second Degree Team for the Spanish speaking men in the State of Alabama. The Tuscaloosa Council then began to reach out to our Hispanic Brethren to offer them a chance to participate in the Knights of Columbus programs of service to their communities, churches and clergy.

The intent was to have this initiative serve as a pilot program that would become a template for Hispanic Development throughout the State of Alabama.

Now, the Tuscaloosa Council has created a First Degree Spanish speaking team for future Hispanic enrollment to go along with the Hispanic First Degree Team from Montevallo, giving Alabama two First Degree teams to offer K of C membership to all within the State of Alabama.

Tuscaloosa is also forming a second Hispanic Second Degree Team that will be complete by August 2010. This too will serve the entire State of Alabama as the Knights of Columbus expand its presence and offer the Second Degree to Hispanics throughout Alabama.

The entire effort has reaped enormous benefits as it brings together different cultures to serve our Lord through membership in the Knights of Columbus.

Alabama is blessed to have an organization like the Knights of Columbus that allows the State to develop these opportunities which will bring together the Catholic men of Alabama under the umbrella of the church and the order of Knights.
